Land mark corneal transplant surgery

The following article is taken from the New Indian Express. http://newindianexpress.com/states/tamil_nadu/Landmark-corneal-transplant-surgery/2013/11/10/article1882094.ece How much of a donor’s cornea does an eye surgeon need to give a blind person eyesight? Less than half the diameter of a human hair, thanks to a new technique pioneered by city-based surgeon Dr Amar Agarwal. “Instead of taking a whole cornea or even half a cornea, we are now taking only the innermost three layers, where the thickness is only about 25 micron, and transplanting it,” said an excited Chief of Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital. “After UK-based Dr Harminder Dua discovered the sixth layer of the cornea earlier this year, I began working on a technique that would revolutionise the way eye transplants are done,” explained Agarwal. The new technique is set for publication in medical journals and Agarwal is setting about spreading the ‘love’, by demonstrating it at ophthalmic groups the world over. “This...

Image
A new type of surgery done in madras medical mission: Kindly read the full article published in Times of India: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-10-10/chennai/42899276_1_right-kidney-belly-button-45-year-old-patient Chennai doctors remove cancerous kidney through belly button CHENNAI: A team of doctors from the urology department at the Madras Medical Mission (MMM) has removed a cancerous kidney of a patient through the belly button. Since the patient was anaemic, doctors had to come up with a way to minimise blood loss. The solution was a laparoendoscopic single site surgery (LESS), which is minimally invasive. While the usual surgical procedure leaves a big scar and takes longer time to heal, LESS decreases pain, blood loss and shortens the recovery period without a scar. The 45-year-old patient from Kerala approached doctors at MMM two weeks ago with signs of renal failure. The patient was put on dialysis and just when he was being prepped for a renal...

Fall out of Gautam Vasudev Menon and Suriya

It is now on public as a news that the combo - director gautam vasudev menon and actor suriya parted their ways. Certainly this is one of the low period for both the actor and the director. The to be underlined fact is no one should ever set into a combo and that too named as winning combo. For a director, it should be the script which asks to select an actor and not the script should be woven to suit the image of an actor or to appease the actor. Naturally, when your films are not doing well and a director turns it in one film, you had faith to give another hit. This is ordinary psychology. But the combo will only set for actors who are bound to release their films one per year. It should be remembered that Rajinikanth in one of his recent function said that he is in alone at the top and there is no people [directors] around him who have given hits with him. After the musical hit of vinnaithandi varuvaya, a much festivity was created and celebrated with Ilayaraja for the film nee...

The boom and doom of engineering colleges in Tamilnadu

Here is a published article on how the sudden surge in engineering colleges lead to their closures. http://newindianexpress.com/states/tamil_nadu/Studentless-Engineering-colleges-eye-shift-to-Arts-and-Science/2013/10/03/article1815952.ece1 1. Few colleges benefitted with sure inflow of other state students year by year, who doesnt mind of money but to get the graduation as an aim. These led to many situations. A sudden increase in real estate business and the apartments where quickly booked and were rented for the other state students. Those who didnt fair well on the studies took on the job of brokers to get the student admitted in colleges which led to many disputes, worse ending some in murders. 2. It created employment for lecturers but the quality of lecturers were not sure, since many of them havent passed the NET exams, which in turn produced less quality in teaching. 3. Bank loans were made available to the students those are aspiring for engineering degrees easily as e...

Viable option - guduvanchery bus stand

date september 6th friday. Since monday is also a holiday, the traffic is expected....why in all fridays, the traffic is expected, either the stretch from urapakkam to perungalathur will be standstill or from tambaram to perungalathur will be standstill. Worse scenario is the ambulance sirens seems like increasing the panic even more to higher level getting stuck amidst the worst traffic. Even in TV flash news, it was displayed when i arrived home that the the highways witnessing traffic from chrompet to tambaram and from perungalathur to maduravoyal bypass upto 5 kms, the vehicles are piling. Where is alternative thinking? or "situation analysis"? there is no proper mofussil bus stand in vandalur, urappakkam. but there is a considerable space in guduvanchery, which was mostly unused by less frequented MTC buses. Why not this guduvanchery bus stand was utilised for either SETC buses to pick up the passengers instead of perungalathur? or why not this guduvanchery bus stand...

Carpal tunnel syndrome

This week, one of my colleague went to a check up because of wrist problem. She doesnt have senses in the three finger, except the thumb and the little fingers, when she woke up in the morning. Though this is a preliminary stage, a quick medical check up revealed that it is a carpal tunnel syndrome. As most of our urban youth are working in IT/ITES related companies, this is yet another story to share. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/carpal_tunnel/detail_carpal_tunnel.htm

The untold story-TNSTC bus driver

Read a news last week that a driver saved the bus from rolling down in a hill-way, while he suffered massive heart attack. Not an easy thing, when a man physically feels pain and the job comes straight away in his mind, with the nature of his job, 55+ passengers lives are in his hand. Only if he liked his job, only if he had committment to his job, only if he has dedication to his job, this thought will come forefront in his mind and thinking and thus he saved those lives, giving away of his own. In the days, where a medical research or a new discovery leading to save lives from infections or diseases, getting headlines and awards, this is worth to mention, as i know, personally, they are the one, the drivers of TNSTC - tamil nadu state transport corporation, by whom i was able to live today, from 1996. I dont have RIP messages, as i wasnt a believer of that. And hence i would like to record his effort to swerve and stop the bus without letting it in his path to downhill, as a state...

e-Thrombosis

Just read an article in Indian express this week and i am sharing the same. http://newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/IT-employees-at-greater-risk-of-e-Thrombosis/2013/08/17/article1737679.ece Are you the kind of techie who spends long hours in front of the computers without a break? Beware, you are at risk of developing a potentially fatal blood clot in the veins, located deep in the muscles. Doctors say that those who sit in front of the computers for long periods, without a break, can suffer from e-Thrombosis or Electronic Deep Vein Thrombosis (e-DVT). IT employees are at a greater risk as they are likely to spend more time in front of computers than others. Relatively a new variant of DVT, a person suffering from e-DVT can develop blood clots in veins of their legs, pelvis, hips or arms. Medical experts say that prolonged immobilisation can develop a thrombus or a blood clot. This can put the person at risk of an embolism or obstruction of the blood flow.  “Your ca...
