Govt. hospital uses X-Knife to treat tumour

On evaluation, she was found to have a nine mm tumour in the vestibular cranial nerve close to the brain-stem - a vestibular schwannoma . A release from the hospital said the youngster met with a road accident three years ago, which resulted in an injury to the brachial plexus, a network of nerves responsible for carrying signals from the spinal cord to the shoulders and arms. G. Balamurali , consultant spine and neurosurgeon at the hospital, said when a person suffered damages to the brachial plexus, it would cause extreme pain and weakness of the limbs. “The pain experienced is so severe that some patients want their limbs removed,” he said. 55-year-old woman undergoes 3 successive cardiac procedures

Source: The Hindu, Chennai Edition, WEDNESDAY JULY 20, 2022 She suffered a heart attack followed by recurrent episodes of irregular heartbeats Doctors at Kauvery Hospital here performed three successive procedures to save the life of a 55-year-old woman who suffered a cardiac attack and a ventricular tachycardia (VT) storm (life threatening recurrent episodes of irregular heartbeats in a short span of time). Addressing the media here on Tuesday, the doctors said they first performed a coronary angioplasty to place a stent and open the blocked artery that caused the heart attack, followed by a radio frequency (RF) ablation procedure to treat the irregular heart rhythm. The woman subsequently received a percutaneous defibrillator (a kind of pacemaker) implant as a precaution against future episodes of irregular heartbeats. 55-year-old man undergoes aortic valve replacement

Source: The Hindu , Chennai edition,  FRIDAY JULY 22, 2022   A 55-year-old man, who had underdeveloped limbs and was born with a single kidney, underwent an aortic valve replacement surgery at MadrasMedical Mission (MMM) . Doctors decided against Transcatheter Aortic ValveImplantation (TAVI) considering the risks involved due to his multiple co-morbidities and opted for surgical replacement with a tissue valve. The patient has deformities in his left upper and lower limbs due to a condition called phocomelia , where the limbs are underdeveloped. This deformity was the side effect of the drug Thalidomide given for morning sickness during pregnancy in the 1950s and 1960s. He was born with a single kidney and has had episodes of pancreatitis for which stents were placed, a press release said. In the first case, the boy from Bangladesh presented with acute respiratory distress and was diagnosed with a tumour in the trachea, which is the windpipe. This was blocking the right side of the bronchus. He was operated in his country during which a small portion of the tumour was removed, Rakesh Jalali , medical director and lead, Neuro Oncology, Apollo Proton CancerCentre (APCC) , told reporters on Monday. At APCC, the thoracic cancer management team evaluated him and found a large tumour blocking the bronchus, and it was difficult to operate on, he said.
